Ellert Kristofer Schram, known as Elli, is the founder of  EKS VERK, a company that is transforming Iceland’s construction industry with sustainable, fast-drying concrete.

After spending 20 years in Denmark studying and working in construction science and architecture, Elli returned to Iceland in 2013 with a vision. He saw an opportunity to introduce a groundbreaking technique he had encountered in Denmark: dry concrete.

Traditional construction methods in Iceland relied on water-intensive concrete or water-intensive gypsum-based screeds, often requiring months to dry before flooring could be installed. Recognising the inefficiency and environmental impact of this approach, Elli decided to adapt Denmark’s dry concrete solution to Icelandic needs.

His product, “Þurrsteypa” (Dry Concrete), uses 100 liters less water per cubic meter compared to traditional methods, potentially saving up to 1,000 liters of water per average home—enough to fill a hot tub! This innovation not only benefits the environment but also significantly reduces construction drying times. Additionally, it lowers the risk of mold in homes and decreases the energy consumption associated with construction and drying processes.

Elli chose IEBP for his company due to its alignment with EKS VERK’s sustainability goals, innovative approach, and strong collaboration from the first meeting.

After an initial attempt to utilize Icelandic sand proved unsuccessful due to its unsuitability for this particular method, Elli remains committed to exploring ways to develop the technique using local sand in the future. Currently, EKS VERK currently uses sand imported from Denmark.

The impact of EKS VERK is already noticeable. The company’s eco-friendly concrete has been used in rebuilding schools and in a private home in Urriðaholt, Reykjavík, which received the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, “Svansvottun”. This marked the first time the prestigious label was awarded to a private home in Iceland.

Elli’s philosophy centers on thoughtful growth. “It’s not about expanding quickly,” he says. “It’s about making a lasting impact.” With its innovative solutions and commitment to sustainability, EKS VERK is paving the way for a greener construction industry, one floor at a time.

We are delighted to have Elli at IEBP and wish him every success!
